Week in review: practicing
It has been a big week for sure! I’ve spent the last few days in Portland, at the Open Engagement Conference and many of my posts have covered that. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start from the beginning. The week began with some real T courtesy of Bad at Sports’ official Gossip Columnist, Dana Bassett, including E-Dogz upcoming,  ”Twends”  spotted at the SAIC Fashion Show this year, an architectural study of the Bachman House, a WHO WORE IT BETTER and some sketch gifs by Elisa Haw... Post frieze antidote: the frick collection
After the contemporary art overload at the fairs, galleries and auction houses the last couple weeks, it was a bit of fresh air to enjoy the Frick Collection's small but important Piero della Francesca exhibition. More images Piero della Francesca Artist Piero della Francesca was a painter of the Early Renaissance. As testified by Giorgio Vasari in his Lives of the Artists, to contemporaries he was also known as a mathematician and geometer. Wikipedia Born: 1415, U... [more]

Pam butler at marie walsh sharpe open studios
James and I visited Pam Butler’s studio in early May during the Marie Walsh Sharpe open studios. I’m a big fan of her recent installations and paintings. She’s now exploring works related to Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. Here is a short statement on the current work: I have of late been thinking a lot about what it means to be a female artist inside of not just a very male tradition but one where the depiction of the female is among the most prominent subject matters in the... Jr’s “inside out: the people’s art project” premieres this monday on hbo
What happens when citizens around the world take control and ownership of an artist's creative vision?  JR, a good friend of the Wooster Collective, explores these questions as part of his ongoing Inside Out project, now the subject of "Inside Out: The People's Art Project", a fantastic new documentary premiering this Monday night on HBO. JR first conceptualized Inside Out as he began to post his now iconic portraits in locations such as the West Bank barrier wall, which gave these an... [more]

Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento responds to my post yesterday on his latest post on Prince-Cariou.I wasn't really disagreeing with him.  It's hard to say whether things were better or worse pre-Prince.  Sergio says we're left now with a fair use clusterfark, which is true.  But we had a fair use clusterfark before Prince.  You'd need a very finely tuned clusterfark detector to be able to measure the difference. Expo 1: new york @ moma ps1
A visit to MoMA PS1 comes with a guarantee of seeing great art. This museum never disappoints and often helps us to discover artists we aren’t familiar with. But this time we left EXPO 1: New York, the exhibition currently on display, with an even stronger feeling. This show has the potential to become a cultural landmark, something people will still talk about in ten years, just like Altermodern or Sensations.   EXPO 1: New York brings together different narratives that deal with some of the big ... Richard serra
Richard Serra: Double RiftsThrough June 1stGagosian Gallery Poet Ted Kooser writes in “After Years” about seeing a woman he used to love and relates the encounter to both the vast and tiny tectonics of the world: “Without a sound/the glittering face of a glacier/slid into the sea,” he writes, “An ancient oak / fell in the Cumberlands, holding only/ a handful of leaves.” The poem then turns on a sort of hinge, elegantly pivoting away from the large and anonymous into the small and specific: “An old woman/scattering corn to her chickens looked up/ for an instant.” It feels like... Paradox of the panoptic
"There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment...you had to live in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinised." - George Orwell, 1984 In 1787, Jeremy and Samuel Bentham came up with an idea of a circular prison with a central tower where guards could monitor inmates housed in cells around the inner circumference of the structure. David bowie's new berlin elegy: where are we now?
Early this morning David Bowie celebrated his 66th Birthday with the release of his first single in a decade. This song Where Are We Now?, taken from Bowie's forthcoming album The Next Day, is accompanied by an artful video directed by the contemporary artist Tony Oursler. Set in a black and white Berlin of memory and dream, Oursler's video combines with Bowie's voice and lyrics to question the themes of human bondage, release, freedom,  doubt, ageing, and death.  The video opens with a... Quote for this campaign season
"Thus it is manifest that the best political community is formed by citizens of the middle class, and that those states are likely to be well-administered in which the middle class is large, and stronger if possible than both the other classes, or at any rate than either singly; for the addition of the middle class turns the scale, and prevents either of the extremes from being dominant. Great then is the good fortune of a state in which the citizens have a moderate and sufficient proper... [more]

And since deceased greats are also too large, they are cut down. The nose, say, is served separately, or the tongue. You need less gelatin that way.
