In the photo project, Two Essays on Banks, currently on view at Callicoon Fine Arts, Simon re-presents Strauss’ article Transparency: The Highest Stage of Bank Architecture, from a 1985 issue of Wedge Magazine. In the issue, entitled The Imperialism of Representation / The Representation of Imperialism, Strauss interprets bank architecture in relation to global financial factors which have become more critical today. As 1980’s art culture undergoes its inevitable historicization, the conversation, their first in 27 years, turns an appropriation into a dialog. John Strauss is a furniture designer, fine furniture maker and art professor in Ohio.
