Gretta Sarfaty’s Modes of Past
by Magdalena Zieba
Gretta Sarfaty at Sartorial Contemporary Art
March 19th - April 5th
Posted
4/11/13
Gretta Sarfaty gained international recognition in the late 70’ as a body-art and performance artist. Beginning with a traditional medium of painting, she early started to experiment with new media and performance. Even if her art has remained authentically ingenious over the years, the ways of her expression have changed, reflecting the evolution of digital technology.
She has never been dogmatic: even when expressing a strongly feminist approach, she moves smoothly around multitude of questi... [more]

Bad Behaviour show review
Oct 2012
On the walk from Brixton train station to visit Bad Behaviour, past clothes stalls, car mechanics and food wholesalers which operate underneath the arches – including the wonderfully named ‘Just Yams etc.’ – I wondered how this group exhibition was going to position itself. Would it attempt to engage with the context of Brixton, its independent spirit and history of rebellion and rioting – or was the ‘bad behaviour’ of the title indicative... [more]

This year’s ‘potlatch’ was a neat and tidy affair. The giving was orderly.
In the understated chapel of All Hallows on the Wall, City of London Parish, we were invited to select from 24 framed pictures taken down from the metaphysical vertices of the gallery walls, laid out in a grid on temporary trestles and tabulated like fish on the dock. Each picture was a gift.
Last year’s potlatch – by all accounts – was more fractious. Then there had been paintings as well as... [more]

A fascinating and exciting show with eight new artists exploring 'what's unsaid.' Avoiding shock and obvious political messaging, each artist respects the mute quality of art, it's form of speechlessness and silent writing to probe the limits of the sayable - whether in terms of language and indentity, abstract qualities of fate or time, or the language of pencil, paper, paint, neon and latex. Materials are to the fore here (and perhaps at time an echo of arte povera) and the curators are to be... [more]

Art Review: Aviary
by T Evans
Céleste Boursier-Mougenot at Barbican Art Gallery
February 27th, 2010 - May 23rd, 2010
Posted
4/19/10
In a gloriously original and creative move, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot’s first UK solo exhibition taps into an audiovisual buffet of nature. At the Barbican’s ‘Aviary’, visitors find themselves unwitting participants in a dance of nature as birds ‘perform’ in an art installation.
A dark space opens into a cheerful seaside promenade, complete with wooden decking and islands of sand and grass. Curiously, Les Paul guitars, bass, and cymbals rest in these spaces. As your senses ad... [more]

The “surgically precise images” of Sophie Ristelhueber has won her the 2010 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. In a ceremony on 17 March, film director Terry Gilliam presented her with the £30,000 award at The Photographers’ Gallery. Hailed for “push[ing] the boundaries of the photographic medium”, her 2009 retrospective exhibition in Paris earned the nomination.
The annual European competition, now in its 14th year, draws international entries from contemporary photographers. Considere... [more]

For a “leading contemporary” photographic competition deemed “one of the most prominent exhibitions” at this gallery, the experience is decidedly underwhelming. The nominees may well be worth the £30,000 prize, but the scant offering leaves visitors with little indication why. With photo-documentaries dominating the line-up, originality has taken a back seat.
The series ‘Eleven Blowups’ (‘06) by Sophie Ristelhueber drew interest with its “layers of construction and destruct... [more]

Robert Kusmirowski: Bunker
by T Evans
Robert Kusmirowski at Barbican Art Gallery
September 30th, 2009 - January 10th, 2010
Posted
1/7/10
Having ostensibly hollowed out subterranean passageways beneath the Barbican, Robert Kusmirowski’s creation manipulates the senses for an emotional evocation of time and place. The Polish artist’s recreation of a World War Two bunker, his first UK solo exhibit, evokes a harrowing wartime narrative.
From the onset, it’s clear an affecting experience is being orchestrated, as you face the gloom beyond a rusted metal doorway etched in heavy concrete façade. A strong sense of exploration into t... [more]

Conspicuous amongst the classical paintings at the National Gallery, challenging issues permeate its first modern installation, a recreation of Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Prostitution continues to inspire strong reactions, prompting artistic interpretation over the centuries, evidenced here by paintings from 17th century Dutch artists.
Conceived by American artists Ed Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz in 1983-8, whose controversial depictions of taboo subjects have influenced contemporary... [more]

Melissa Marks' work, Adventures of Volitia: Expulsion from Paradise, currently up at Bloomberg SPACE is inspiring, stunningly beautiful and well worth the visit. The sprawling color drawings pull the viewer around the space, their saturated colors and complex narrative elements provide an intensity and depth that pulls one in and won't let go.
Complementing these eleven power-filled drawings is a series of ceiling-height, black and white wall drawings, culminating in a 22-foot high, 43-foot wide epic. These drawing... [more]
