Janet Lage (b. 1955, Massachusetts)
I combine a disciplined, formal painting process with the raw spontaneity of chance and intuition. To create each composition, I allow internal forces of perception and impulse to collide with the external forces of possibility and playfulness. Although I experiment with new methods of application, my work remains driven by the materiality of paint. During each exploration my goal is to emphasize the physicality of the paint medium. I leave traces of my application and process to emphasize a gritty, tactile quality. Throughout my process, language serves to energize the physicality of my painted surfaces while momentarily harnessing logic, intuition and guesswork. Oftentimes, one provocative phrase acts as a platform to inspire a whole new series.
Education: Studied at University of Maine, Maine Film Alliance Summer Residency and Hartford Art School.
Janet Lage was chosen as a Winner in Round#1 of 2012 Showcase Series.
