Robin Peckham considers the HK scene with Mimi Brown, Alan Lau, and Lawrence Chu
When Artinfo released the China-focused edition of an article featuring the most influential young players in the art world, the preponderance of Hong Kong-based figures, occupying twelve of thirty positions, was unexpected. by Lu Jun
Sun Ji, LU Jun at M97 Gallery
August 1st, 2009 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Posted
8/29/11
Lu Jun’s large-scale photography works use the three fundamental elements of Chinese landscape painting - water, ink, and paper - combined with techniques of modern photography to create poetic landscapes that flow in both form and color.
Lu Jun’s motivation as an artist is to create rather than to imitate, using the tools available to him as a contemporary photography artist.
Water and ink captured in photographs, and under the artist’s control, blend together in dreamy clouds... [more]

Anne Fontaine, Celebration
Mixed media installation by Nathalie DujmovicShanghai, China, 2010
The luxury French retailer, Anne Fontaine, celebrated Chinese New Year with an art installation in their shop windows in Shanghai. The traditional lantern shape is reproduced with red colour lights, the colour of good fortune. The red chilies are a symbol in traditional Chinese culture of “hot” success. They are supposed to bring good luck and success to Anne Fon... [more]

Yuichi Higashionna at Gallery EXIT

12/12/10
The show marks the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong by the Japanese artist Yuichi Higashionna, featuring seven new works since 2008. Intrigued by the 'uncanny' feeling he gets from the everyday life and the dominant and ubiquitous 'fluorescent lamp culture' in Japan, Higashionna creates monster-like light sculptures from the Japanese circular fluorescent light tubes that are mesmerizing at first glance yet arouse a sense of awkwardness and distress when being viewed and stared repeatedly for a... "Stabs of light opening endless distances "
More than pictures, the works of di.Lo travel in a world of textures, plots of ephemeral lights that intersect in abstract ethereal cosmic landscapes.
Avant-garde art works that gently delineate swirls of color that aim to capture the interactions between light and a subject that transforms reality into an ephemeral form. [more]

The works of ‘Beneath My Skin’ may be regarded with Western intuition and references, the viewer naturally connecting them to the works of great masters - Bacon, Schiele, Basquiat, De Kooning. And, certainly, we may also have the tendency to seek Vietnamese sources - Buddhism, sacred paintings, ancient rites - within each of artists - Do Hoang Tuong, Nguyen Minh Thanh, Dinh Y Nhi and Ly Tran Qunyh Giang. Yet, it would be a pity to entertain comparisons and parallels that are simplistic in na... [more]

Synesthesia was a frequent fascination of Western modernists. In “Music to My Eyes,” Beijing-based curator Karen Smith’s variation on this old theme, visitors heard bands including Girl Kill Girl, Dead J, and ZigZag. They see Liu Ye’s small paintings of Mozart, Chet Baker, and Taiwanese pop singer Teresa Teng and enter Kaleidoscope (all works 2009), a cycloramic environment designed by Chen Hangfeng and Ben Houge, which displays—on six walls and in real time—images taken through a ka...
